First launch and prerequisites

Picky is menu-bar-first. On launch, click the Picky icon in the macOS menu bar to open Picky Hub, its regular macOS workspace window. Picky appears in the Dock and app switcher only while that Hub window is open.
Picky runs on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14.2 or later. Intel Macs are not supported.
If permissions setup is incomplete, Picky opens Hub automatically and shows the required prerequisites on the Dashboard. When Picky finds no model it can sign in to, the same card shows an AI account row with Connect account, which opens Connected accounts in Settings.
On a new install, the Dashboard also asks what to call your main agent. The field starts with Picky; keep it or enter another name, then choose Use this name. Closing Hub without choosing leaves this card available next time; it does not block conversations or permission setup. Existing installs keep Picky without being asked to repeat onboarding. You can change the name later in Settings → Accounts and agents → Main agent, or use the Change name link beside the conversation subtitle. Picky remains the product name.
Picky includes its own Pi runtime, so you do not need to install Pi separately. If you also use Pi in a terminal, Picky shares your Pi directory (~/.pi/agent by default) for sign-ins, plugins, and settings.
Starting with 0.15.0, the bundled subagent provider runs agents only on Pi; it no longer includes the Claude Agent SDK. If a custom agent declares runtime: claude, remove that field before running it. Claude models remain available through Pi’s Anthropic provider.
Required items:
| Item | Why Picky needs it |
|---|---|
| Microphone | Captures Push-to-Talk voice input. |
| Accessibility | Enables global shortcuts and capture interactions. |
| Screen Recording | Captures screenshots for context. |
| Screen Content | Enables ScreenCaptureKit-based screen context. Picky only surfaces this row after Screen Recording has been granted, since the underlying API requires the parent permission first. |
Speech Recognition is not part of the initial setup gate. If you use Apple Speech STT, macOS may separately request Speech Recognition during dictation.
Setup actions shown in Hub include:
- Grant: requests or opens the matching macOS permission pane.
- Find App: reveals Picky in Finder and opens Accessibility settings, useful for unsigned/dev builds.
- Open Picky at login: on by default for a new install; switch it off here or later in Settings > General. If every permission is already granted (for example after a reinstall), the same switch appears on its own card on the Dashboard until you have seen it.
When all prerequisites are satisfied, Picky shows Hub’s Dashboard and its nine-page sidebar.
